VWC Conducted Awareness Sessions for CCECC Workers in South Santo
On 19-20 August 2026, the Vanuatu Women’s Centre conducted two awareness sessions for workers at camp sites in the South Santo area, reaching a total of 250 participants in Luganville Santo.
The first session was held on 19 August 2026 at the Najara campsite in South Santo Area 1. A total of 108 participants attended, including 23 women and 85 men. The session brought together Ni-Vanuatu, Filipino, Sri Lankan and Chinese workers.
The awareness focused on violence against women and girls (VAWG) and key findings from the 2024 research on women’s lives and family relationships in Vanuatu. The session with the Chinese workers was delivered with the assistance of a translator. Participants from the Ni-Vanuatu, Filipino and Sri Lankan group also had an opportunity to raise questions, including issues relating to sexual harassment and child maintenance.
On 20 August 2026, VWC continued the awareness program at the Noanetas campsite in South Santo Area 2. The session reached 142 participants, including 26 women and 116 men.
The second session again covered violence against women and girls and findings from the 2024 research. Discussions with participants highlighted different perspectives and questions around gender and respect for women. Ni-Vanuatu participants raised a question about women wearing trousers, while Filipino participants shared that, within their customs, women are highly respected.
These awareness sessions provided an important opportunity for VWC to engage directly with diverse groups of workers in Santo, promote understanding of violence against women and girls, and share evidence from the 2024 national research.
