A half-day intensive training was conducted with workers contracted under CCECC, focusing on various aspects of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), including gender roles, violence against women, domestic and sexual violence, the Family Protection Act, human rights, and the services provided by the Vanuatu Women’s Centre (VWC).
The workshop aimed to raise awareness, strengthen understanding, and equip participants with practical tools to address GBV in their workplaces and communities. A total of 26 participants attended the session, which was held at the CCECC compound in the Prima area.
The session served as a refresher for participants who had previously joined VWC trainings. The facilitator opened with a brief discussion on gender discrimination, gender stereotypes, and gender equality, followed by a group activity comparing the daily workload of men and women. This sparked lively discussions and questions from participants.
The workshop then shifted to violence against women and domestic violence. Participants worked in groups to identify forms of abuse common in their communities and presented their findings. The facilitator expanded on these discussions, linking the identified abuses to various types of violence.
Participants also learned about the Cycle of Violence, recent data from research on GBV, and the impact of domestic violence on victims and children. The session concluded with an overview of the Family Protection Act and a brief history of the Vanuatu Women’s Centre and its services.
Despite the short duration, the training was well-received. Participants showed great interest and requested additional sessions in the future. It was a productive and informative time that allowed participants to gain new insights to support their roles both professionally and personally.
