On Thursday, 15 May 2025, it was the National Women’s Day which the Vanuatu Women’s Centre celebrates every year. This time, it was celebrated together with the Vanuatu Cricket Association, who hosted an Island Cricket Game under the theme:
“WORKING TOGETHER TO PROMOTE GENDER EQUALITY THROUGH SPORTS.”
The event brought together communities around Port Vila who participated in Island Cricket to raise awareness on gender equality and to help prevent violence against women and girls through sports.
At the start of the program, representatives from the Vanuatu Cricket Association, the Australian High Commission (Vanuatu – Deputy Commissioner), UNFPA, and the Vanuatu Women’s Centre (VWC) gave speeches to support efforts toward gender equality through sports. These organisations are working to use cricket as a way to create positive change in the lives of women and communities in Vanuatu.
The event concluded with a cricket tournament involving women and girls. Sports can uplift women’s confidence and help make communities safe and happy.
